Thank you! After recently discovering Sowell and dedicating A LOT of time to read/review many of his books I had the feeling I was participating in an exercise in which an ice cream cone licks itself. As a layman in Economics, I can say that Sowell's perspective makes you think, but one should always seek to trust but verify! So, again thank you for providing the verification of this work and in doing so shining the light on the biases contained within. Who knew? Well, I guess you did.

Thank you for covering this. It's something I think about constantly. I mean, just in my lifetime alone Acid Rain went from being a constant threat to a rarely talked about issue, which is wild to think about. When I was younger, I lived in a very rural area...we eventually moved to a big city and I had immediate health impacts. Asthma that I'd been born with but had never experienced symptoms of suddenly took over my ability to engage in sports and PE at school. My asthma became much worse after I was out of school for over a month with Bronchitis which eventually became Pneumonia. When we got a new PE teacher, he refused to believe that my asthma was an issue (assuming that I was trying to use it as a way to get out of participating) so I ended up pushing myself too hard when I should have been healing...and it did permanent harm to my body. I never quite recovered after that and I can still see the impacts on my health to this day. Also, my school gave out awards for attendance, so kids would come to school and give the rest of us airborne illnesses. After that bout of pneumonia, getting sick became an ordeal and I ended up missing a lot of school over the years. So it really stung that people were rewarded for ignoring the basic health rules we were all supposed to follow while the rest of us paid for it with our health AND missing class. I'll never forget how scary it was to feel myself drowning in my own fluids. I never want to experience that again. That, combined with the fact that I end up in the ER with bronchitis every time our household gets a cold means that I take Covid deadly seriously to this day. I'm still isolating, which isn't fun or easy (especially seeing everyone go "back to normal," even if it kills grandma) but between that and masking whenever I go out...I've not gotten sick with cold/flu/etc. in years. And it helps with allergies and small amounts of smoke from whenever my neighbors burn things. When we got hit by the smoke from the Canadian Fires I got severely ill even with masking and staying in as much as possible. That was heinous. It makes me hesitant to return to California, what with the constant fires each year. (That wasn't an issue when I left!)

I'm disgusted by people who want to give up on solving climate change. I'm old enough to remember acid rain and the hole in the ozone layer. In those days, the scientists pointed out a problem and identified the cause, and the rest of us read their data and their analysis and their proposed solution, and we carried out the proposed solution AND IT WORKED. Why aren't we doing that now? The trees recovered and regrew once we stopped acid rain. The ozone hole is still recovering, but every year it's better than the year before. We accepted that something we were doing was causing unacceptable harm, and we stopped doing that thing, and we fixed the problem, and life went on. No governments were overthrown, no nations went to war - we just changed how we did a few things and fixed. the. problem. We could do that for carbon pollution too if we wanted. The baseline figure of <270ppm isn't a pipe dream. We can do it. We just need to DO IT.

Don't open the windows if you can avoid it. Outdoor air is full of road dust (brake dust and tyre dust particularly) and pollen. Get a good mechanical ventilation system - ERV or HRV depending where you live - and use it to pump clean *filtered* air into your living space.

Note that a droplet that is 100 microns across is not 20 times the size of a droplet that is 5 microns across. The volume of a sphere is proportional to the *cube* of the diameter, therefore the ratio is 1,000,000:125 or 8000:1. The WHO was out by a factor of eight thousand.

I have seen quite a number of Sowell's interviews. In every single one of them, he appears to draw his conclusion from a single observation. If you meet someone who does that in real life, you'd probably brush the person off as, well, fervent, or zealous, or just plain stupid. So, what explains the Sowell phenomenon, then? I suspect he is only famous because he is Black, and is willing to use his identity to peddle counterproductive theories.

Traditional economies, such as those of hunter-gatherer societies, may not fit neoclassical models that emphasize sustained surplus or formal market transactions, but they involve complex systems of production, exchange, and resource management. Taking a narrow view limits our understanding of modern economies, which encompass diverse practices like informal economies, gift economies, and even digital platforms. Studying traditional economies can shed light on these modern subsystems, revealing how similar principles of resource management and exchange operate across different contexts.

The reason it's inherent to capitalism should be obvious but perhaps wasn't made explicit. If we have things that last a lifetime... once you've got all the things you need, all you need is enough energy/food/water to live and your set. Which makes retirement much easier, much sooner. You don't need to work anymore. But if we aren't working, we aren't making wealth for the capitalists, which is the point of capitalism. However if we had a system that was fundamentally pro-human, that would be the aim. Why work jobs we don't like for things we don't need? Wouldn't it be nice to do what you want instead? The only reason things lasting too long hurts the average worker, is because the capitalists took all the wealth and you need the job to survive. That isn't inherent. THere is plenty of everything needed for everyone. It's just capitalists in league with states that are hoarding most of it and renting it to the rest of us.

Peterson misses the point. The conservative narrative is as follows: 1. The "pay gap" is exaggerated, as demonstrated, after normalization for truly equal work it goes to 90%, and some may argue part of that still is really "skill gap", like sports. But that's irrelevant, if credible studies really show it's real, then let's acknowledge the problem, now let's address it. 2. Solving the problem by equalizing pay for men/women is only worsening the discrimination. That is assuming we can even do it right, which we obviously can't, it's almost certainly going to be overshoot or undershoot, which causes other problems, but again, say we did it perfectly. If you were a sexist (or racist/ageist for that matter) employer, you no longer have to pay extra for your bias thanks to the pay gap being eliminated. Why the hell would you ever hire another woman? The sexists used to have to pay a price, which, well, discourages sexism, now they don't. This video mainly attacks the narrative of pay gap being fake, and briefly no.1, but not 2, not sure this strawman is on purpose or not.

Instead of "Trade-ons" maybe consider that there is no such thing as a "trade-off" in economics. There are only consequences. Economies are not so basic that you get an immediate loss from any investment (regulations, purchases, sociocultural actions, etc.). There are instead plenty of consequences, many of which are unquantifiable, which just result in people having to respond and adapt. If you invest in my neighborhood, it gets better, but more than likely it will also be too expensive for me to live there any longer. This is not a "trade-off", it's just a reality of US style economic systems. Years later, the neighborhood will at least be a nicer place to live. The contemporary Economist preaches that the "trade-offs" will be too expensive for businesses to survive and everybody will be layed-off permanently. Yet regulations are commonly surpassed and sometimes even provide a functional means for business to expand into new territory. The Preacher fears the next religion.

Till this day i held onto this one sentence "Fuck the economy, people are dying!" It's the perfect expression on why "but the economy" shouldn't override more important things like safety, health, etc. Analyzing tradeoffs are fine, but there are priorities that needs to be adhered (and economy is pretty low in it).

Unfortunately you miss a lot of nuance with the comments about ports. There are very, very clear differences in the ability of ports to move containers from megaships to outside the ports, on their way to their intended destinations. While each situation is unique, governments, unions and entrenched interests often play a crucial role in making megaships a lot harder to process than they could/should. Just take a casual look at the avg number of containers per operator, in different ports, it's quite shocking.
